Information
Important Note
The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute
for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or
other healthcare professional. It should not be construed to indicate
that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you.
Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.
Why
is Testosterone prescribed? Testosterone
is an injectable steroid, which comes in an oil presentation. This
medication releases testosterone gradually from the injection site.
Once administered, serum concentrations of this hormone will increase
for several days, and remain markedly elevated for approximately
two weeks. It may actually take three weeks for the action of this
medicine to fully diminish.
This
medication is also prescribed by doctors regularly to treat cases
of hypogonadism resulting from androgen deficiency (1) and anemia
and other disorders related to androgen deficiency.
Since
patients generally do not self-administer such injections, a long
acting steroid like this is a very welcome item. Therapy is clearly
more comfortable in comparison to an ester like propionate, which
requires a much more frequent dosage schedule. Testosterone has
also been researched as a possible male birth control options. Regular
injections will efficiently lower sperm production, a state that
will be reversible when the medicine is removed. With the current
stigma surrounding steroids however, it is unlikely that such an
idea would actually become an adopted practice.
How
do I use Testosterone?
Follow
your doctor's instructions, and take this medication exactly as
prescribed by your health care professional.
What
are the potential side effects from Testosterone?
The
side effects of Testosterone enanthate are frequently the distinct
androgenic effect and increased water retention. This is generally
the reason for the frequent occurrence of hypertony. Those who have
a predisposition for high blood pressure or whose blood pressure
is elevated when they begin taking Testosterone enanthate should
have it periodically checked by a physician. If necessary the intake
of an antihypertensive medicine, such as Catapresan is advisable.
Other possible side effects in a high dosed treatment with a Testosterone
compound are an often reversible interruption or reduction of the
spermatogenesis in the testes size, and especially an increased
aggressiveness. Those who transfer this aggressiveness to their
training and not their environment do not have to worry. Further
potential side effects can be deep voice and accelerated hair loss.
What
should I discuss with my doctor before taking Testosterone?
Before
using this medicine, tell your doctor all your medical history and
any disease you suffer from, or other medications you are taking.
What
is the recommended dose for Testosterone?
The
standard dose, as already mentioned, varies from 250 mg/ week up
to 2000 mg/week. In our opinion the most sensible dosage for most
athletes is between 250-1000 mg/week. Normally a higher dosage should
not be necessary
When
taking up to 500 mg/week the dosage is normally taken all at once,
thus 2 ml of solution are injected. A higher dosage should be divided
into two injections per week. The quantity of the dose should be
determined by the athlete's developmental stage, his goals, and
the quantity of his previous steroid intake.
What
should I do in case of overdose with Testosterone?
Any
medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you
suspect an overdose with Testosterone, seek medical attention as
soon as possible.
